How does clonazepam work?
Clonazepam 2 mg tablets work by enhancing the effects of GABA, a chemical messenger that controls the movement of nerve messages in the central nervous system. The role of GABA is to reduce the activity of overactive nerve cells. It helps regulate feelings of nervousness and anxiety when nerve cells become overexcited.
How long does this medication take to activate?
When starting treatment, symptoms of anxiety usually improve within one hour of the first dose.
Why would I take this medication?
This medication is effective if you have panic disorder with or without agoraphobia. Panic disorder involves sudden and persistent occurrences of intense anxiety or fear. Panic attacks develop abruptly and can be emotionally debilitating for a patient. This medication can reduce the intensity of panic attacks. Other anxiety disorders that involve panic attacks, like social anxiety disorder, can also be effectively managed with the use of this medicine. Clonazepam for sleep is often used to treat anxiety associated with insomnia.
Will it in any way adversely affect my fertility?
Clonazepam information and research suggests this medication is not associated with infertility. However, you must not take this medicine if you are pregnant, might become pregnant or are currently breastfeeding.
What is the standard recommended dose for taking this medication?
The recommended starting dose for adults is 0.5 to 1 mg per day. This can gradually be increased over 2 to 4 weeks. The maximum dose for panic disorder is usually 4 mg per day, depending on how well the medication is tolerated. If you forget to take a dose, it should be left out and the next dose should be taken as usual, when it is due.
