Description
What is Zopiclone?
Zopiclone tablets typically come in two strengths; 3.75 mg and 7.5 mg. However, they are also now available in 10 mg tablets at some online pharmacies. Of the different strengths available in the UK, zopiclone 7.5 mg is the strength that is most commonly used for treating bad bouts of chronic insomnia.
Like various other popular prescription sleeping tablets, zopiclone comes from a class of medication called nonbenzodiazepines. Nonbenzodiazepine sleep medicines are much newer than their benzodiazepine cousin and are also commonly referred to as Z drugs or Z hypnotics.
While benzodiazepines can produce a calming effect and help make patients feel sleepy, they can also be used to treat a host of other disorders. Nonbenzodiazepine medications on the other hand are generally only used for the treatment of insomnia and severe anxiety that is preventing patients from getting a good night’s sleep.
Studies show that this medication can cure insomnia and improve sleep pattern over a short time by providing undisturbed rest.
How Zopiclone Tablets Work
While non-benzodiazepine hypnotic sleep medicine has a slightly different chemical structure than benzodiazepine sleep medicine, they both work in a similar way, acting on the brain to aid sleep.
The brain contains a natural chemical called gamma-aminobutyric acid or aminobutyric acid (GABA). GABA is a naturally occurring inhibitory neurotransmitter which blocks signals in the brain to help promote a calming feeling in the human body.
As well as promoting a calming feeling, GABA sends signals that help relax muscles and induce sleepiness.
This cyclopyrrolone hypnotic medication is known to work with the naturally occurring gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the body to quickly promote a feeling of calm and relaxation which make patients feel sleepy.
By promoting an increased feeling of relaxation, patients are able to fall asleep much quicker than they normally would.
While nonbenzodiazepines and benzodiazepines both act on the brain in a similar way, nonbenzodiazepines are considered a safer option for insomnia treatment, especially in patients over the age of 65 years old.
Because nonbenzodiazepine medication has a shorter half-life than benzodiazepines, the medication leaves the body quicker, and there is a decreased risk of patients experiencing daytime drowsiness the next day.
Insomnia, Anxiety & Zopiclone Tablets
Everyone experiences difficulty sleeping from time to time, and up to 1/3 of the UK population is thought to be suffering from chronic insomnia. Insomnia is the regular occurrence of sleeping problems. If you regularly find it hard to get to sleep, lie awake at night, feel tired when you wake up or take naps during the day, then you have insomnia.
Depression along with anxiety are leading causes of insomnia, in fact they are kind of a package deal that create a vicious circle:
People that suffer from insomnia are more likely to suffer from anxiety, people with depression are more likely to suffer with insomnia, and people with anxiety disorders are more likely to lie awake at night thinking negative thoughts.
As such, while the main use of this medication is the treatment of insomnia it has been known for people to use zopiclone for anxiety also.
| Zopiclone for Insomnia: | Insomnia is a condition that is experienced by many individuals. It consists of two major types – one being the inability to fall asleep (sleep onset insomnia) and the other is having difficulty staying asleep.
Poor sleep can cause a multitude of issues including fatigue and depression. Luckily, this condition can be treated with a number of medications. Most users report a noticeable reduction in the time it takes to get to sleep, as well as improved sleep quality. |
| Zopiclone for Anxiety: | Some people use zopiclone for anxiety. The use of zopiclone for anxiety has been highly successful with an increasing number of patients experiencing positive results, thanks to the mild muscle relaxant properties. This medication provides a fast-acting calm, sleep-inducing effect which enables patients to relax and fall asleep. |
Benzodiazepines vs Non-Benzodiazepines
- The pharmacodynamics of non-benzodiazepines is similar to that of benzodiazepines thus making these classes of therapeutics closely related in benefits, adverse effects and hazards. However, this class of medications were synthesised in an attempt to optimise the pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic properties of benzodiazepines.
- Non-benzodiazepines have dissimilar chemical structures to benzodiazepines, and are unrelated on a biochemical level, which could be a reason for the improved efficacies of these sleep aids.
- Central nervous system (CNS) depression is potentiated by benzodiazepines. This is not likely with non-benzodiazepines, unless consumed with alcohol. This and other precautions can be found on our website when you buy zopiclone online.
- There is little dependence concerns with zopiclone and tolerance is unlikely. This is because, when used for chronic conditions, zopiclone causes less receptor adaptation – which is owed to its characteristic interaction with the GABA receptor.
- Different benzodiazepines have different abuse potential but in general, this class of medication still carry an increased risk of misuse over non-benzodiazepines.
- Non-benzodiazepines are much more selective than the older benzodiazepines and are thus more precise.
What The Research Says:
- Both classes of medications work by raising GABA activity. A meta-analysis of the comparison between benzodiazepines and non-benzodiazepines found zopiclone tablets were associated with fewer awakenings, increased total sleep time and better sleep quality. It was also revealed that patients found it simpler to fall asleep using zopiclone than benzodiazepines.
- Research shows that zopiclone, being a cyclopyrrolone, is superior and at very least equal to benzodiazepines (Montplaisir et al., 2003).
- At normal dosages, Olsen (2008) reported that zopiclone caused impairment to cognition on a much smaller scale than benzodiazepines. Randomised controlled trials also revealed that adverse effects are lesser in severity and frequency for benzodiazepines than Z-drugs.
- There is at least a 50% less chance of hip fractures in the elderly when using non-benzodiazepines. This was especially significant with continuous use or within the initial stages of administration.
How To Use Zopiclone 7.5 mg
It is recommended that patients carefully read and understand the usage instructions to fully benefit from this sleep medicine.
Zopiclone 7.5 mg should only be taken if you are certain that you are going to get a full 7 to 8 hours of sleep and at least 15 hours before needing to drive or operate machinery.
If you awaken before 7 – 8 hours, you may experience feelings of drowsiness, dizziness and decreased alertness.
Other usage guidelines recommended are as follows:
- This medication can be taken with or without food, however, large meals or high-fat foods close to the time you take the medication can delay the onset of effects.
- The tablet should be taken whole with some water and should not be crushed or chewed.
- If you wake up during the night, do not take another dose as this can increase the likelihood of side effects.
- The use of alcohol with this medication is not recommended as it can make the medications sedating effects much more potent.
- Caffeine can interact with this medication (as they work in the opposite way) so drinks like coffee, tea and cola should be avoided.
Zopiclone Dosage Instructions
Just like all other sleeping tablets, zopiclone should be taken just before bedtime. The recommended zopiclone dosage is one 7.5 mg tablet at bedtime.
This sleep medicine generally takes a maximum of 1 hour to take effect and patients usually experience continuous 7 – 8 hours’ sleep without any nocturnal awakenings throughout the night.
This medication is so powerful and effective at treating insomnia that doctors may only prescribe it for as little as 2 – 5 days.
After establishing a healthy sleep pattern, patients should gradually reduce their dose over a few days (up to 2 weeks) to prevent cases of rebound insomnia.
Due to its habit-forming qualities, the maximum amount of time that this particular sleep medicine should be prescribed and used for is 2 – 4 weeks.
Zopiclone Side Effects
All medications come with side effects and this one is no different, however the benefits of getting a good night’s sleep for someone suffering from insomnia usually far outweighs the side effects.
This medication in particular is well tolerated by most patients, however, as with any treatment, side effects may occur in a relatively small percentage of people. These side effects will disappear when the medication has left the system, or can be easily managed.
Zopiclone side effects are most commonly experienced by patients that don’t follow the dosage instructions, precautions or contraindications on the patient information leaflet.
Some Zopiclone side effects include:
- A bitter/metallic taste in the mouth that does not go away. This side effect can, however, be alleviated by sucking on sugar-free sweets/ ice chips, sipping on water or using a mouthwash for dry mouth before bed.
- Excessive sleepiness/tiredness. Patients should refrain from doing any concentration-based activities like driving or operating machinery until full consciousness is achieved and maintained.
- Dizziness. This can be prevented by getting up slowly from a lying or sitting posture.
Consult with a doctor of pharmacist first if you:
- have ever had an allergic reaction to medication.
- are taking any other kind of medication (including herbal remedies & natural supplements).
- have a record of drug or alcohol abuse.
- have a mental health disorder.
- have kidney or liver problems.
- have myasthenia gravis.
- are over the age of 65 years old.
Do not take this medication if you:
- are pregnant, trying to get pregnant, or breastfeeding.
- have breathing problems such as sleep apnoea.
- have already consumed alcohol or other recreational drugs such as cannabis.
- are under the age of 18 years old.
